There is a story that Frederick the Great of Prussia was walking on the outskirts of Berlin when he encountered a very old man walking along. “Who are you” asked Frederick, and the old man replied, “I am a king”. “A king”, laughed Frederick. “Over what kingdom do you reign?” The old man replied, “Over myself”. In Proverbs 25, the wisest of all earthly kings wrote, “He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down and without walls”. We live in a world that is increasingly troubled by those who have no self-control. Once the walls of self-discipline tumble, a spirit of rebellion and anarchy takes over. Such a person becomes a danger to others, to society, and to themselves, for sooner or later they will self-destruct or be shipwrecked in a life of turmoil and failure. Here in the United States, we have learned to value self-discipline, but we now see our society shaken by those who give no allegiance to any king – not even to themselves – but have become anarchist and rebels against the peace that should exist within the heart of every person. If your life is full of turmoil, chances are there are battles that rage within and without and you need a Prince of Peace to bring order to the kingdom where you live. This includes your own heart, your family, and your many relationships. There is one king that is even better than yourself at bringing such a peace, and his name is Jesus Christ. When you have lost the battle with yourself – it is time to surrender to a king that has never lost a battle.
